Pune man in CBI custody for making forged papers

The special court of judge SN Sardesai granted CBI custody to Amit Chandrakant Kadam, a resident of Tingrenagar on Thursday for allegedly obtaining home loans from United Bank of India’s Deccan Gymkhana branch by preparing forged documents.

The deputy general manager and chief regional manager of United Bank of India, Mumbai registered a complaint with Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Mumbai on February 1.

The EOW arrested Kadam on Wednesday and also booked former manager of the Deccan Gymkhana branch, P Viswanadhan, proprietor of M/s Prithvi Developers, Rashmikant Kantilal Shah, and 14 others under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, 1860 for their involvement in the fraud.

Arguing for seeking 14-day CBI custody, special CBI prosecutor Anil S Kankariya told the court that Rs2.49 crore was disbursed as housing loans through forged documents.

Kankariya told the court that Kadam used to prepare borrowers’ loan documents and visit the branch with these proposals.

“Kadam’s custody is needed as the investigating agency wants to recover incriminating documents in the possession of the suspects who are on the run. The CBI also need to find out from where Kadam procured the forged documents and what he has done with the home loan funds,’’ Kankariya told the court.

During the investigation, the agency revealed that the flats are in the possession of people other than the borrowers. Kankariya told the court that Viswanadhan with the connivance of suspect Deepak More and Parvez Khan disbursed loans and cheated the bank to the tune of Rs2.49 crore.

However, the court remanded Kadam in CBI custody till February 22.
