VW starts production of new sedan

German carmaker Volkswagen has begun production of a new sedan at its Chakan plant near Pune.

The car which is being positioned between the Polo hatchback and Jetta would be launched by August-September this year.

“We have already started producing the new sedan which would be bigger than Polo but smaller than Jetta. We are currently producing it in small numbers and would commercially launch it by August this year,” Kurt Rippholz, head, communications India Volkswagen group and brand, said. He, however, refused to divulge details on the car, while clarifying that the proposed car is not the Polo sedan.

According to industry sources the new car is to be named Vento. VW flagged of the Polo Cup from Pune today.

Meanwhile, the company on Wednesday announced it would ramp up the production of Polo at its Chakan plant in order to meet with the demand. “We are very happy with the way Polo has been doing, our production is on track and in line with the quality of our other cars built in Germany, Mexico and South Africa. We now plan to increase its production step by step,” Rippholz said.

Volkswagen started producing Polo at its Chakan plant from December 2009 and has an installed capacity of 1.1 lakh per year. “We expect to reach full capacity in the next one-and-a-half or two years,” he said.

Apart from this, officials from Volkswagen and Suzuki Motors would soon discuss the common projects that the tie-up would bring to India.

Senior Suzuki officials recently visited the Chakan plant. “It is all at a nascent stage we are in talks with Suzuki in finalising the projects and the announcements would be made soon. The tie-up could look at co-operation, both in launching new products and exchange of knowledge. The two companies had earlier announced they would launch a low-cost car for the Indian market.
