TK Lahiry, who heads Bharat Coking Coal Ltd, is said to be the frontrunner to take over the reins at Coal India Ltd,  the world’s largest coal-mining company.

The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has found him to be the most suitable among seven candidates interviewed on Thursday, sources familiar with the development said.

“We will recommend the names of two candidates for the top position — Lahiry, and D C Garg, chairman and managing director of Western Coalfields Ltd,” one person said.

Coal India is currently headed by Partha S Bhattacharya, who will retire on February 28 next.

The PESB had called for applications from candidates in May.
Of the seven interviewed on Thursday, four were were internal candidates, coming from Coal India subsidiaries.

Apart from Lahiry and Garg, VK Singh, CMD of Northern Coalfields Ltd, and R Mohandass, director, personnel and industrial relations, Coal India, were interviewed.

“Now the recommendation of PESB would be sent to the ministry of coal for approval after which the new Coal India chief’s name would be finalised,” said the official.
