Swarnim Crown dazzles at Sparkle 2012 in Surat

Sparkle 2012 kicked off at SIECC in Surat on Friday with many attractions on offer for visitors. Apart from diamond-studded spectacle frames and scissors, diamond-studded mobile phones and Bluetooth devices grabbed visitors' attention too. However, there were limited visitors on the event's first day, which the organisers believe would increase over the coming days.

The fourth edition of Sparkle - a gems and jewellery exhibition, was inaugurated by the Consul General of Sri Lanka, Upitha Samartunga. While a majority of the exhibitors focused on Indian jewellery designs, there were few exceptions, which were a treat for the visitors as well.

There was a spectacle frame studded with diamonds as well as a pair of silver scissors emblazoned with diamonds and other precious stones. The spectacle frame has 106 diamonds. The scissors made of 40 grams of silver have 154 rubies, 88 white diamonds and a similar number of black diamonds.

"The diamond-studded frame is priced at Rs2.25 lakh, while the scissors are priced at Rs80,000. We have used high-quality diamonds to produce both items," said Pravin Nanavati, MD of She Jewels, which has crafted both the masterpieces.

Nanavati said that they the idea of these ostentatious products occurred after they decided to craft some special products using diamonds.

Another such delight was the Swarnim Gujarat Crown prepared by BR Designs. The crown made of gold and 6 carats of diamonds, is priced at a whopping Rs6.5 lakh. It has been prepared to celebrate the golden jubilee of the state's formation.  "We decided to commemorate the 50 years since the formation of Gujarat and planned the crown. This is a one-off piece and is completely handcrafted. It took us one month to finish the crown," a spokesperson of BR Designs, said. Apart from the Swarnim crown, BR Designs also has on display an exquisite diamond-studded cellphone and diamond-studded Bluetooth device. The cell-phone costs Rs3.80 lakh, whereas that of the Bluetooth is Rs1.10 lakh. Apart from diamonds, gold and silver metals have been used to prepare these unique pieces.

Temple jewellery was another attraction at the exhibition, displayed by Kantilal and Bros. The price for a single such necklace is between Rs3-4 lakh.
