Strike at CEAT's Nashik plant called off

Labour strike at CEAT Tyres's plant in Nashik was called off today after 23 days, and around 1,600 striking employees have resumed the duty.

"It is a big relief for us. All striking employees resumed duty today. We have reached an amicable solution," CEAT managing director, Paras Choudhary, told PTI.

The employees at the plant, located in Satpur industrial area near here, went on a flash strike on September 29, following a tiff between a contract labourer and a union-affiliated worker.

There are 2,000 workers at the plant, 40 percent of them contract employees.

Praveen Mandhare, president of CEAT Union, told PTI that the strike was called off after Sanjay Services, the labour contract firm, handed a letter yesterday saying that it was withdrawing its services to the company.

After the tiff between the workers, the union had sought rescinding of contract given to Sanjay Services, which is headed by local Shiv Sena leader Sunil Bagul. Union had also asked for removal of personal manager Rajendra Joshi.

Mandhare said the second demand was dropped as the union's main grouse was against the labour contractor.
