Sterlite Energy 2400mw plant delayed 3 months

Sterlite Energy, a subsidiary of Sterlite Industries, is running three months behind schedule as far as its 2400 mw power plant in Jharsuguda, Orissa, is concerned.

While the company was expecting the first unit of the
4 x 600 mw plant to be up and running by now, it now sees the unit being ready only by June 2011.

Navin Agarwal, deputy executive vice-chairman, Vedanta Resources, said during an analyst conference, “The first unit of the 2,400 mw plant is expected to be commissioned in Q1 FY 2011, with the remaining three units to be progressively commissioned by the end of FY 2011”.

A company official, on the condition of anonymity said, “There was a change in visa rules regarding the Chinese workers and that has caused some delay. Now, we have engaged a European consultant to carry on with the work.”

Sterlite Energy has received coal linkages for its 2400 mw and 1215 mw projects at Jharsuguda. Agarwal said 50% of the coal requirements will be sourced through Coal India and the rest will be bought through e-auctions, etc.

On the company’s initial public offering, Agarwal said, “We have received the approval from Securities and Exchange Board of India and are waiting for the right time to approach the market. At this point, I don’t have a date.”
