Sikorsky sees big opportunity in homeland security in India

Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, maker of Black Hawk and Sea Hawk helicopters, is looking at tapping the homeland security market of India that has thrown up huge opportunity with rising insurgency in the country.

The helicopter company is currently pursuing business interest in the commercial and military helicopter segments.

Anthony Mooreland, regional sales executive, India worldwide sales, Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation said the company was looking at supplying helicopters for homeland security needs, which includes rescue and search mission.

“Right now, our focus is on ground-based opportunity, but at some point they’ll (India) understand the need for helicopter for home security. That’s a big opportunity for us,” he said.

Currently, Sikorsky has products such as Black Hawk and S-76 aircraft, which are being used for homeland security services and by the police worldwide.
The helicopter company, which recently formed a joint venture with Tata Advanced System to manufacture cabins for its S-92 helicopter, is in the process of extending the tie-up for making precision components.

Though, AJS Walia, managing director of Sikorsky Aircraft, said it was not yet clear whether these would be produced at the Hyderabad plant.  “We are looking at precision components, which can be made for our helicopters. It is most likely going to be made at Hyderabad. That is a call we have to yet take. We in dialogue (with the Tatas), MoU has been signed, but the nitty-gritty has to be worked out,” said Walia.

He said the company was looking at making India its second home after US.
