Power ministry seeks 8 mmscmd gas for RPower plant

The power ministry has sought allocation of 8 million metric standard cubic metres per day (mmscmd) of gas for Reliance Power’s 2,400 mw Samalkot power plant.

The Anil Ambani-led company’s plant is among four projects for which the power ministry has sought allocation of 14.5 mmscmd of gas.

Torrent Power’s 1,200 mw plant at the Dahej SEZ in Gujarat (4.48 mmscmd), the 436 mw RVK Energy plant in East Godavari District (1.62 mmscmd), the 100 mw Pandurang Energy Systems in West Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh (0.4 mmscmd) are the other three for which the ministry has sought gas.

The ministry had earlier sought allocation of 15.59 mmscmd for six projects totalling 4,066 mw. These included GSECL’s Hazira plant (1.31 mmscmd), Pipavav CCPP, PH-1, Gujarat (2.62 mmscmd), Bawana CCGT, Delhi (4.67 mmscmd), Lanco Kondapalli Power Pvt Ltd (3.08 mmscmd) Kashipur, CCGT, Uttrakhand (0.84 mmscmd) and GMR Vemagiri, Arunachal Pradesh (3.07 mmscmd).

The 10 gas-based power plants would thus have a total power generation capacity of over 8,200 mw and require 30 mmscmd of gas for getting operational during the 11th Plan period, the ministry has stated.

The list has been sent to the empowered group of ministers (EGoM) on gas utilisation.

The Central Electricity Authority will review the progress report for all the plants that have been given priority over others on the basis of their completion possibilities during the 11th Plan period.

The EGoM had said that the petroleum ministry would take appropriate action on allotment of gas from ONGC’s C-series and Bandra Formation to some of the KG-D6 customers in Uran region.
