Power bill in Gujarat may go up by 20%

Your power bill could soon go up by almost 20%. Torrent Power Limited, which supplies power in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Surat, has proposed a sharp hike in its power tariff, which could increase the power bill of the three cities by more than Rs658 crore in the current financial year.

In a petition before Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC), the company has proposed sharp hike in power tariffs for various categories, including residential and commercial consumers.

Torrent Power is seeking a hike of 19.47% in the tariff for Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, and a hike of 10.47% for Surat for 2011-12. It has proposed implementing the revised tariff with effect from April 1, 2011.

It is also seeking determination of aggregate revenue requirement for Multi Year Tariff Second Control Period, i.e. from 2011-12 to 2015-16. Torrent Power said it had filed the petition in view of gap in net aggregate revenue requirement and the revenue from sale of power at the existing tariff rates.

“The gap in the case of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar is Rs499.44 crore for 2011-12, while the gap is Rs159.18
crore for Surat,” the company said in the petition.

Torrent Power has estimated revenue from sale of power (at current tariff) at Rs3,465.01 crore and Fuel & Power Purchase Price Adjustment (FPPPA) revenue of Rs620.93 crore, as against net aggregate revenue requirement of Rs4,744.55 crore. The company proposed to recover Rs499.08 crore from Ahmedabad supply area (which includes Gandhinagar) and Rs159.32 crore from Surat with revision in tariffs.

Besides increase in power tariff, the company has proposed Fuel & Power Purchase Price Adjustment (FPPPA) charges as applicable in addition to the existing FPPPA of 70 paise per unit. It has also proposed a sharp rise in fixed charges.
