Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has given the green signal for trading of shares via mobile. With the regulators nod, the stock exchanges are all set to offer the facility to investors through their registered brokers.

Industry players expect the mobile trading to change the way trading is done in the country. It is likely to make the process easy, fast and simple. Given the fact that mobile penetration is around 50 crore compared to about 1 crore of internet connection, the trading volumes are bound to rise in the long term.

All major brokerage houses including Kotak Securities, Angel Broking, India Infoline, Motilal Oswal Financial Services among others are gearing up to launch mobile trading as and when it comes. Mobile trading is expected to be launched in India in the early part of October 2010.

Know mobile trading
An Investor will need to have an online trading account & internet enabled mobile instrument

Mobile trading will be similar to internet-based trading.

An Investor will have to download a software application from the link forwarded by their broker

Then the investor needs to enter his/her user ID and password for access to the same.

A mobile-based platform will support both browser as well as software based application.

What can you do with mobile trading

All trading facilities accessible in internet trading will be available in mobile trading.

Investors will be able to see real time changes in share prices and market data of multiple companies on their mobile screen.

Trading in cash segment can be done from anywhere in the country through the mobile phone.  

Investors can also place limit price orders, view position, get fund transfer from banks etc.

Whom will it benefit
All those investors who lack internet connection can benefit by opting for mobile trading. It is of particular help to those in marketing or sales profession.

Mobile trading will benefit people in smaller towns, semi-urban and rural areas where internet penetration is comparatively low.

Benefit of mobile trading
The dependence on brokers for trading will take a fall

Unauthorised trades and grievances will reduce.  

Trading can be done from anywhere in the country

An investor will be able to know the real time prices on his screen     
As mobile penetration is very high, it will help generate more volumes for brokers.

Concerns with mobile trading
The cost could be a drawback for mobile trading, but with internet charges falling thanks to the telecom revolution, the problem may be addressed soon.

If a mobile instrument gets infected by virus this could pose a problem

Password hacking could also be a concern.
