The Oberoi Group is the sole bidder for managing Punjab's ambitious luxury train project.

"Oberoi Group has submitted the bid for this project (luxury train)," said a senior official of Punjab tourism department here.

"After evaluating the technical bid (of Oberoi Group), we will again call for the price bid before taking decision on allotting the project," he said.

Other companies, which showed interest in managing the train project were Mapple Hotels, Cox & Kings and Lepassage, although they stayed away from participating in the bidding process.

Punjab Heritage and Tourism Promotions Board had sought global expression of interest for selecting the management of the super luxury tourist train that would cover popular destinations in North India, including Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib, Chandigarh, Dharamshala, Patiala and Kurukshetra including Agra, Delhi and Jaipur in its 7-day itinerary.

Punjab had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ministry of railways last year to start a luxury tourist train in the state.

The cost of the project is estimated at Rs29 crores, out of which ministry of tourism would contribute Rs7.25 crore, while Indian Railways Catering Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and government of Punjab would give Rs10.87 crore each.

The train is targeted at the premium clientele, and the coaches would be equipped with 5-star facilities comprising saloons, restaurant cars, lounge bars, observation cars with a viewing gallery, gym, spa, beauty saloon, library, games room and a computer centre.
