Maldives president Mohammed Nasheed today said his country was in talks with various Indian companies to tap renewable energy sector in the island nation.

"The country as part of making electricity available through renewable energy source has already inked pact with many companies, including General Electric and Falcon Engineering", Nasheed told reporters here.

"We want to make the whole electricity to be renewable. We declared that we have to be carbon netural within 10 years. And to do that we have planned to make investments of about 100 million USD a year," Nasheed, here in connection with the CII Partnership Summit, said.

"We have signed agreements with General Electric and Falcon engineering to produce 75 mw of wind power, and also have entered into contract with Suzlon to produce another 25 MW", he said. He said the Government was also in talks with various
renewable energy companies including, WINWIND India.

Stating that much of energy and its resources were untapped particularly in ocean currents, Nasheed said if that could be developed under a cooperation with India, it would lead to a win-win situation.

He said his government had already privatised water supply and also telecommunication. Two Indian companies were bidders for the development of International airport to be set up in Maldives.

He also said his country offered scope for Indian companies in areas such as infrastructure, health care, education, sewerage stems, ports, transports, harbours, airports, tourism, and real estate.

To a question, Rasheed said he always respected the sentiments of India.  "Our relationship with India is very amicable...," he said.

On tapping the tourism sector by India, Nasheed later told PTI that they had taken various safety measures for foreign tourists to have a pleasant stay in Maldives.
