Largest recall: Honda to replace window switch in 72,115 Citys

If you drive a Honda City manufactured between 2005 and 2007, then your power window switch will soon be replaced by the company for free as a ‘preventive’ worldwide initiative.

The switch is being replaced to prevent any malfunctioning though no accidents have been reported because of it anywhere in the world so far, Honda Siel Cars India said. Effectively, Honda will ‘recall’ 72,115 Citys made between 2005 and 2007, making it the largest such exercise in India by an auto maker.

Car owners will be contacted to carry out the exercise smoothly, the company said.

Honda had announced another recall in January last year for 8,532 units of the City manufactured in 2007 to replace the lost motion spring in the valve train. The company at present sells the third generation of City, which is not affected by the current recall.

The replacement in India is part of Japanese parent Honda Motor Company’s global recall of 960,000 of its cars including the Fit subcompact (which is sold as the Jazz in India) and other models for the same faulty part.

Honda Siel clarified neither the CRV nor the Jazz would be affected by the recall in India. In Japan, the recall covers Fit produced between October 2005 and October 2009.

The recall comes close on the heels of Honda slashing prices of both the City and the Jazz significantly following increasing competition. The company also said it’s passing on the benefits from increased localisation of parts. The recall comes just as Honda prepares to launch its first small car, the Brio, in India.
