The agriculture sector in the state grew by a staggering 16.63% in 2011-11, more than four times the national average, state agriculture minister Dileep Sanghani said in the assembly on Monday.

Sanghani was taking part in the discussions on the budgetary demands for the agriculture and co-operation department.

"The state's farm growth was -2.09% from 1991 to 2000. However, we increased it to 10.67% from 2001 to 2010, while it rose further to 16.63% in 2010-11," Sanghani said. He further said that farm output in the state increased from Rs14,663 crore in 2000-01 to Rs80,000 crore in 2010-11.

Sanghani also gave details about the allocations made for various works and projects under the agriculture department.

Earlier, Congress MLA Ramsinh Parmar said that the state government was organising Krishi Mahotsava, Garib Kalyan Mela and Sadbhavana fasts in rural areas, but these were not going to help in development of farmers or villages.

He demanded that adequate water and power be supplied to farmers.

The discussion on agriculture department demands saw frequent exchanges between Ruling and Opposition members over the ban on cotton exports, and the manner in which it was hastily withdrawn.

The House also debated the budgetary allocations of the fisheries, animal husbandry, co-operation and legal departments for the year 2012-13 during the day. The demands were approved by the assembly.
