GSPC a step closer to gas production

The installation of well-head platform at Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation's (GSPC) Deen Dayal West field in KG Basin has been completed, taking the state-owned company one step closer to commencement of gas production, a senior company official said.

“The first big milestone for the project has been achieved with installation of the wellhead platform in DD West field on May 18. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) had begun work on the platform in April 2010 and has completed the installation in a record time of 13 months,” said Tapan Ray, GSPC managing director. This gives us confidence that we will be able to complete the project in the next 25 months and start producing gas from DD West field by mid-2013, he said further.

Gas production from DD West field was slated to commence in December 2011, but delays over various issues have pushed back the date by 18 months.

Asked about the next phase of work, the GSPC MD said that construction of onshore gas terminal and other related infrastructure was going on simultaneously.

“Besides the gas terminal, work on Pour Point Depressant and associated sub-systems is going on. The work on offshore process platform has also commenced. The capping beam is being installed and it should be in place by July or August, which will be followed by mobilization of the rig,” he said.
Ray further added that GSPC is also close to awarding the contract for laying a sub-sea pipeline, which will bring the gas from the wellhead platform to the shore.

The state-owned company has so far spent US $1.35 billion (approximately Rs6,000 crore) on the ambitious project. The total expenditure is projected to increase to $2.1 billion (Rs9,450 crore). Ray said that GSPC was meeting the fund requirements through internal accruals and government equity.

GSPC expects to produce 6 million metric standard cubic metre per day (mmscmd) from DD West once the project goes on stream. Ray, however, said that gas production would rise further once more fields get activated.

“We have time till March 2013 to submit declaration of commerciality of more fields to the DGH. More gas could flow in the subsequent four to five years,” he said.
