GSPC a step closer to gas gusher

Installation of wellhead platform at DD West field in KG Basin completed; hopes to start gas production by mid-2013.

GSPC a step closer to gas gusher

The installation of wellhead platform at Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation’s (GSPC) Deen Dayal West field in KG Basin has been completed, taking the state-owned company one step closer to commencement of gas production, a senior company official said.

“The first big milestone for the project has been achieved with installation of the wellhead platform in DD West field on May 18. Larsen & Toubro (L&T) had begun work on the platform in April 2010 and has completed the installation in a record time of 13 months,”  Tapan Ray, managing director, GSPC said.

“This gives us confidence that we will be able to complete the project in the next 25 months and start producing gas from DD West field by mid-2013,” he said.

Gas production from DD West field was slated to commence in December 2011, but delays over various issues pushed back the date by 18 months.

Asked about the next phase of work, the GSPC managing director said construction of onshore gas terminal and other related infrastructure was going on simultaneously.

“Besides the gas terminal, work on Pour Point Depressant and associated sub-systems is going on. The work on offshore process platform has also commenced. The capping beam is being installed and it should be in place by July or August, which will be followed by mobilisation of the rig,” he said.

GSPC is also close to awarding the contract for laying a sub-sea pipeline, which will bring the gas from the wellhead platform to the shore, Ray said.

The state-owned company has so far spent $1.35 billion (approximately ¤6,000 crore) on this ambitious project. The total expenditure is projected to increase to $2.1 billion. Ray said that GSPC was meeting the fund requirements through internal accruals and government equity.

GSPC expects to produce 6 million metric standard cubic metre per day (mmscmd) from DD West once the project goes on stream.

Ray, however, said that gas production would rise further once more fields get activated.

“We have time till March 2013 to submit declaration of commerciality of more fields to the DGH (Directorate General of Hydrocarbons). More gas could flow in the subsequent four to five years,” he said.
