Conyk starts to roll, ferries Maruti, Hyundai cars

Conyk Cartrack, an auto-logistics joint venture between Container Corporation of India Ltd (Concor) and NYK Line of Japan, has started moving cars through rail for the top two car manufacturers in India — Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai.

The company is also in talks for similar contracts with other auto makers and newer routes. A Conyk official said the joint venture has started operations on a small scale and is moving cars on the Delhi-Chennai rail route.

Maruti, India’s largest car manufacturer, has plants in Manesar and Gurgaon, while Hyundai, the second-largest car maker, has a plant in Chennai.

The Delhi-Chennai route provides easy connectivity to auto hubs in the country as well as consumption points in northern and southern India.

Conyk Cartrack currently moves close to 25 to 30 containers on this route, or about 150 to 200 cars a month. “This is a small number, but we plan to at least double it in the next two to three months,” the official said.

Concor and NYK Line had formed Conyk last year. As per the joint venture agreement, the cars would be moved on rakes owned by Concor while Conyk would manage the end-to-end auto movement and bring in the investment required for
the specialised containers and other related infrastructure.
The equal-stake venture has a total paid-up capital of around `3.5 crore.
