Cable & Wireless sets up local base

London-based telecom major Cable & Wireless (C&W) World on Thursday said it has set up a new global markets solutions centre (GMSC) in Bangalore.

This is C&W’s first centre outside UK and will be an innovation hub for offshore product development for the company’s global markets - those outside UK including Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa and North America.

Alex Connors — head of international product management — C&W World, clarified the move to locate its GMSC in India was not driven cost but by the fact that huge market potential was unfolding in the country.

Saturation in the UK market, which has flattened the company’s growth, was also a factor making it move some of its operation to high growth Indian market.

"India is the place to be in now. The market is booming here and the case is pretty much similar in other countries in Asia Pacific. However, as of now we have no plans to open up such centres anywhere else in the world,” he said.

The company’s global revenues in the first half of the current year dipped 1.6% to 1.12 billion pounds mainly due to cut in the public sector spending in the UK.
Connors said C&W would be evolving a different operating model from UK for the Indian market.

“The customer base is different here. We will have a different pricing model for India,” he said.

Shali Thilakan, managing director India & South Asia of the company, the company was currently servicing customers in the banking, financial service & insurance (BFSI), IT and ITeS sectors in India.

TCS and MphasiS are among the company’s customers in India.

“Our centre will mainly be responsible for creating and customising standardised and repeatable solution to better serve customers in global markets. Our customers are looking at better, faster and reliable solutions that fit their business needs instantly,” he said.

The company plans to come up with three new products/services for next quarter of 2011. Depending on the success of these products, it will decide whether to expand its operations in India or not.
