Bombardier wins $101 million Delhi metro car order

Bombardier Inc won a $101 million order for 74 metro cars from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, the world's No. 1 train manufacturer said today.

The contract includes an option for another 40 cars.

Once the order is filled -- delivery is expected to end in 2011 -- DMRC will be operating a large fleet of 498 of Bombardier's MOVIA metro cars.

Montreal-based Bombardier, which is also the world's No. 3 plane maker, has made expansion in India a priority. It signed its first contract with DMRC in July 2007, and opened a manufacturing plant in Savli, Gujarat, in November 2008.

Once the phase II expansion of the Delhi Metro is complete, the system will carry 4 million passengers a day and cover 125 km in the city of 16 million inhabitants.

"India's railway industry is expanding at great speed to keep up with the infrastructural requirements of the country," Rajeev Jyoti, president and managing director of Bombardier Transportation in India, said in a statement.

"Having anticipated this growth, Bombardier in India is more than ready and willing to match the industry's needs."
