Bangalore metro, BWSSB get chunk of Rs2,040 crore largesse for Karnataka

In a move that has baffled political experts, the BJP-led Karnataka government is poised to get much more than Congress-ruled Maharashtra through a central assistance of Rs2,040 crore for several externally aided projects during the next fiscal.

The lion’s share of this assistance will go to Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and metro projects.
In fact, this is the largest Central assistance provided to any state in India by Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee in his budget.

The bonanza will support six projects to the tune of Rs2,040 crore. These include BWSSB projects (Rs700 crore), Bangalore Metro Rail project (Rs700 crore), second Karnataka rural water supply scheme (Rs200 crore), Karnataka health system development and reform project (Rs195crore), Bangalore distribution-upgraded project (Rs125 crore) and North Karnataka Urban Sector project (Rs120 crore).

Even Congress-ruled Maharashtra’s share in the Central assistance for the year 2011-12 is just Rs892  crore. The Mumbai urban transport project was given Rs250 crore while two other transport projects in Mumbai got Rs250 crore each. The Maharashtra water project will get Rs242 crore and another transmission project will get Rs150 crore.

Political circles are baffled as to why the Yeddyurappa government has been given preferential treatment over a Congress-ruled Maharashtra.
