Ahluwalia Contracts completes Rs 1,300 crore Commonwealth Games projects

New Delhi-based Ahluwalia Contracts India has completed two of its three projects associated with the Commonwealth Games, said chief executive Arun Sahai.

Ahluwalia was the sole civil contractor for the `1,000 crore Commonwealth Games Village developed by Emaar MGF. There are 34 blocks with 1,168 dwelling units in the Village. “We completed the project end of the last month,” said Sahai.

Ahluwalia also handed over at the same time the `300 crore swimming pool stadium to the Commonwealth Games organising committee. Sahai said the mandate initially was to upgrade the existing pool but it was later changed to build a new pool complex.

During the peak of the economic downturn, Ahluwalia faced some payment delays in the Village project, which was subsequently sorted out through the intervention of the Delhi Development Authority.

DDA was originally to get one-third of the dwelling units and `300 crore in return for its land on which the Village was being built. But with Emaar MGF facing financial problems, DDA agreed to buy 300 more units in the Village.

The only other project Ahluwalia is executing for the Games is a 250-room seven-star hotel for the Leela group, where it’s the main civil contractor. The value of the contract is about `200 crore. “We should complete the project next month,” Sahai said.
