The market started the day with the listing of the National Hydro Power Corporation. After Adani Power, NHPC proved to be yet another disappointing issue for those hoping for quick gains. The company failed to deliver spectacular listing gains that many retail investors expected and closed with a gain of 2%.

“I am disappointed with the NHPC IPO, I thought I would have made a lot of money,” said T Jacob, who works with a large media house and had invested in the company. This negative sentiment among investors seems to have weighed on the market by the end of day’s trade.

The Sensex was down 115.45 points or 0.74%. The Auto index was the top gainer of the day, it was up 2.45%. Except for IT and TECk, which showed marginal gains, all other indices ended with losses. Leading the indices on their way down was the Realty segment. It went down 3.07%.

The Nifty was down 0.79% or 36.5 points to close at 4625.35. There were 11 advances and 38 declines among the 50 stocks that make up the Nifty index. Maruti moved into top gear, rising 7.14% to close at Rs.1540.45.

Tata Motors gained 5.37% to close at Rs.516. Suzlon, Wipro and Hero Honda also exhibited gains. ACC was the top loser among the Nifty pack. It lost 3.31% to close at Rs.780.25. Unitech was down 3.21% to close at Rs.103.90. Sterlite, Cairn and Siemens were the other losers of the day.
