Food review: Don Giovanni in Mumbai

Can’t find the right Italian delight? Here’s where to head...

Food review: Don Giovanni in Mumbai

This restaurant is simply great and the food is what brings it to life. Authentic food at its best and though I have never visited Italy, I understood it through the eyes of Don Giovanni who is a master of his art. The menu is short and familiar with a decent wine list. Expect some patchy dishes, home-style flavours with a presentation to match.

Focus on the pizzas and the pastas (try the thin-crust Contadina). Freshly-made pasta is Giovanni’s forte and the Ravioli pouches, plump with spinach and cheese, remain as good as ever. However, the Lamb Chops are stringy and avoidable. The Chicken Involtini starter, zesty with garlic, and the baked Funghi alla Giovanni are worth trying. The mains lag behind but the Melanzana Arotso and Eisotto ala Giovanni are worth trying.

The unusual almond-cream dessert Liu and the Chocolate Mousse (a dense, dark winner) or the ever-popular Tiramisu are sweet ways to end your meal. I decided to take baby steps because the menu is fairly extensive, with appertifs, soups, first course entrees and then second course entrees and so on. Pair the great food, a fresh pasta or a thin-crust pizza with a nice wine and enjoy an exquisite Italian delight.
