'No one makes sexy clothes in Bangalore'

Designer Raakesh Agarvwal is excited about his first ever show in Bangalore this week at the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour.

What’s the theme of the collection you will be showcasing?
I’ll be showing a couture line. It basically translates to an Indian Goddess on the red carpet. Since it is the bridal season, I’m looking at showcasing the complete journey of a bride.

What are the ensembles that will be a part of this bridal journey?
Weddings are a conglomeration of a lot of little events. Right from the youngsters’ night, which is now an integral part of the wedding ceremonies, to the sangeet, reception and the pheras, I have a collection that encompasses everything — from sexy cocktail dresses to gowns, lehengas and saris.

This is your first show in Bangalore. What do you expect from it?
For me, Bangaloreans are intrinsically not fussy in terms of fashion. While they are sexy and glamorous, they are also practical. I have a lot of Bangalore clients and it is very easy to work with them.

But you don’t store your clothes here?
My clients from the city fly down to Delhi for their clothes but I do intend to open a store here shortly. While Delhi and Mumbai will always remain the fashion hotspots, we cannot rule out the growing spending power of people in Bangalore. The IT crowd has a lot more disposable income and are willing to spend on clothing.

Will it be easy to sell in a conservative market like Bangalore?
I have no apprehensions on that. If you look closely, there’s not a single serious designer in the city who makes sexy and glamourous clothes. I’m confident that my clothes will fit in here.

And you are friends with many glam girls from the city, aren’t you?
Harathi Reddy Rebello is a good friend and has a great sense of fashion. Lara Dutta is an all-time sweetheart. In fact, had it not been for her pregnancy, I’d have definitely opted for her to be my showstopper since it is my first show here.

Are you getting a showstopper?
I had Jacqueline Fernandez walk the ramp as the showstopper in the show in Mumbai. I’m still figuring out whom exactly to bring to Bangalore. I will have someone from the film industry walking for me.
