Classic, romantic, feminist: Gauri and Nainika Karan's designing style

Gauri and Nainika Karan are evening wear designers with styles ranging from cocktail dresses to elaborate gowns that are elegant, chic, feminist and romantic. Nainika Karan talks to DNA.

The source of your inspiration goes back to European history. Why such a source of inspiration?
Gauri and I have always been fascinated by fashion history. The fashion of the 1900s, of old Hollywood, which was inspired by the Parisian glamour, has always been quite inspirational. We have grown up watching these styles on our favourites like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly; we loved the way they dressed. I think that’s what drove us to base most of our creations on this era.

The vintage style is synonymous with feminism and the romantic. Is there a market for such quality of designs today?
I would say there absolutely is. The reason our brand has been running for over seven years now is because women like our designs, they like wearing clothes that are of a different era. We base our creations on very feminist and romantic principles developed through the ages, in both Paris and from trends that dominated old Hollywood. A lot of girls today love wearing clothes designed this way. The design in itself is very flattering.

Your design philosophy?
We create dresses that are very romantic and timeless, basing our creations on the styles that existed in the 30s, 40s and 50s. We also follow our own style, and do not rely too much on current trends or principles.

As evening wear designers, what does your focus lie on while designing?

We focus on cocktail dresses and gowns and we swear by our design philosophy.

Are we looking at a comeback of the styles reminiscent of the 30s, 40s and 50s and why?

Retro fashion will keep making comebacks; the style itself is very classic and timeless. This is not only restricted to clothing but to other forms of designing as well, like home items, product designing and so on. The style has a charm of its own and will always attract more eyes than something modern. People from any creative field will look back at that age for inspiration, style and design.
