Being pushy is just not me: Designer Rehane

Designer Rehane, one of the most popular names in Chennai, gets talking about her idea of fashion.

What’s the latest collection that you’ve worked on about?
This collection comprises of flirty cocktail dresses. These were recently displayed at the Lakme Fashion Week. I’ve then improvised on the same collection for the Swarovski Elements show. I’ve used Indian fabrics like malmal to make my dresses and done crystal work on these dresses, yet keeping the bling element minimal.

Is malmal as a fabric viable when it comes to alluring customers?
Frankly speaking, it isn’t the most appealing thing for buyers, especially in Chennai. While the fabric, the cuts and designs are really of great standards, people don’t consider malmal dresses to be worth what they’re paying for. But that said, there are those niche clients who do know the value of such clothes.

Your clothes have a very European touch to it. Yet you’re based in Chennai. Does the city understand your sensibilities?
Chennai is home to me. While the city is known for its traditional side, it has a set of really trendy people. No wonder top labels are eyeing Chennai and the city also has young, contemporary designers ruling the roost today.

You’re a regular at the two big fashion weeks, yet you’re not someone who does many shows.
I believe that fashion needs to be kept at a niche standard. The two national fashion weeks are reputed and have privileges that they offer the designers that showcase with them. I’ve tried to keep myself to those standards. I accept some of my wrong moves by showcasing in a few lesser known shows, but I know where to position myself today.

You’re from Bangalore, yet your last show in the city was a long time back. Why’s that?
I really don’t know. It is high time that I showcased my clothes in my hometown too. But I’m not the sort who goes behind people asking me to give me a show. Being pushy is just not me. I have thought about the fact that I need to get a little more aggressive in terms of selling myself, but I then negate the idea. I’d rather wait for someone to call me instead.
