Artist Gayathri Shantaram who will be showcasing her latest series of works titled Familiar Spaces, gets chatty to DNA about her series and the prospectives for upcoming artists in India…

Could you tell us about your recent series — Familiar Spaces?
It could refer to one’s homes, work spaces, or everyday sights and sounds that make one feel at ‘home’. These could be in the form of memories — visual, auditory, sensory, related to smells. This is exactly what I felt when I was moving from Chennai to Paris. There is a connection with each item or space with someone in my life while moving into my new home. This is how the concept for the series came about.

Where do you draw inspiration from?
I don’t draw inspiration from only one thing. There are various things that inspire me like every day events in one’s life, events in our world and also from nature, especially the sea and of course like the natural calamities affect me very deeply. For instance, a piece of work has been inspired from Tsunami along with others like the sea and the river.

Where would like to take art from now?
I have already planned a couple of installations, but due to my current restraints and logistics, it is difficult to transport them. It is my first solo exhibition in Bangalore, followed by Chennai and Pondicherry. I wanted to get a feel of the art market in the respective cities, before I decide to take my next step in art.
