What should I feed my rabbit?

An infected tooth, sore on gums, a foreign object stuck in the mouth can cause a dog to drool says Maneka Gandhi as she answers pet queries

What should I feed my rabbit?

Question: My rabbit is very listless and snappy. I cannot understand what we are doing wrong. We feed him lettuce and carrots and he has the run of the house.
Answer: He is hungry. A normal rabbit needs about 130 gms of food daily — fruits, grains, and vegetables, grass, hay, and water. Grains should be limited to 1 tsp per day and should be whole grain. No corn. Avoid lettuce, white potatoes, green beans, anything that grows from a bulb like onions,  grass that has been chemically fertilized or sprayed for pests.  Limit spinach to one large leaf per day. Coriander, carrot tops, and parsley are loved by rabbits and pose very little threat of causing digestive problems. Rabbits enjoy hay as it helps rabbits deal with stress. It should be relatively dust free  with a pleasant, fresh smell.

A slice of apple, or a small chunk of banana is enough fruit for one day for an adult pet rabbit. Grass (moist or green) raisins, broccoli, sprouts, celery, clover, green peppers, peach, pear, grapes, raisins and sunflower seeds are ok.  Do not get frightened if rabbits eat their own feces. This happens in the morning and increases nutrient utilisation. Rabbits needs a fresh, clean supply of water at all times.

Question: My dog is a great eater but not a drooler. Now he has started drooling and its like a tap that won’t shut off. What could be the matter ?
Answer: An infected tooth, sore on gums, a foreign object stuck in the mouth can cause this. You need a close look inside the mouth. Unfortunately no vets in India are trained in dental work as this is not taught in veterinary colleges. But a normal human vet who is also an animal person might be able to help you.
