Relationship queries answered

How far do you think is natural play important for a child. I have a  five-year-old son. I hardly take him to the garden to play. He is mostly busy in activity classes. Is this healthy? Please guide.

Children’s opportunities to interact in a naturalised outdoor setting is greatly diminished today, they have little time for free play. And when children do have free time, it’s often spent indoors in front of the television or computers or in indoor activity classes. Play is a very important part of development for your growing child. Not only is playtime entertaining for your child, but it also provides stimulation, increases skills and coordination, provides an outlet for your child’s energy, and helps to encourage exploration by your child.

Outdoor play refines a child’s gross-motor (large-muscle) skills. When children run, jump, roll, throw, catch, or swing, they are building muscles. While playing, children learn to take turns and share. They learn to act out their feelings, listen and talk to playmates, and follow rules. This will make them start to understand themselves and others better. Through play, children process and manage emotions, and understand and interpret the world around them.

You must make a sincere attempt to take your child a garden to play at least four times a week. Make the time to play with your child everyday. Consider playtime an investment in your child’s future. It is during playtime that you build a bond with your child.
