The length of Pakistan border running through Rajasthan is 1037 kms. Border Security Force (BSF) is the first line of defence. Of late there have been several technological interventions in the force which have made it ultra modern fighting unit with latest gadgets and devices. It is in the process of modernising border guarding and has launched a pilot project called  Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System which highly depends on technology and smart devices. Rituraj Tiwari caught up with Anil Paliwal (Rajasthan cadre IPS) IG, BSF, Rajasthan Frontier shares about the implementation of technology on border security along Rajasthan:

Q. What are the new surveillance devices you are using to protect infiltration?

A. We have become technology oriented force. We have deployed Hand Held Thermal Imager Technology, Special technology cameras, CCTV  and alarm system on the border which alert the force if any activity is seen. HHTIs help in seeing the heat signature of any living being, human or animal that comes towards India. So, we are in a position to see any attempt at infiltration. We are using night vision devices, we are using cameras, we are using radars.

Q. What are the new initiatives you have taken to safeguard the border?

A. We are installing small fencing installed near boundary and they are integrated in control room to get image or information of intrusion. These are early warning devices. Sometimes electric current is also passed through the fence when then act as deterrent to any infiltration.

Q. What steps have to taken for the comfort of our jawans as summers are approaching?

A. It’s very hot and sweltering in summers. We have ordered for desert coolers. We have also done lot of plantation, which may help in dropping temperature by 1-2 degree in the surrounding. Apart from that, we are arranging refrigerator vehicles to supply fresh fruits and vegetables to our jawans braving out there in the Thar.

Q. There has been a drop in drugs and arms smuggling across the Rajasthan border in recent times. What are the reasons?

A. We have been vigilant throughout. We are not taking any chances. Latest surveillance technology coupled with high-end patrolling is keeping a check on any kind of cross border movement. We are also getting good support of locals.
