Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) became the first team to qualify for the final of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 after posting a hat-trick of wins over Mumbai Indians (MI) on Tuesday.
In a packed Wankhede stadium in Mumbai, young spinner Washington Sundar broke MI's back as he removed Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard in quick succession. Chasing 163, MI couldn't recover from the early setbacks and got bundled out for 142.
Earlier, RPS got to a respectable total thanks to healthy contributions from Ajinkya Rahane, Manoj Tiwary and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The visitors were going at a slow pace for the major part of their innings after MI captain Rohit won the toss and put them in to bat first.
RPS struggled to gain the upper hand in the contest despite Rahane and Tiwary stroking half-centuries. It was left to MS Dhoni to play a quick-fire knock of 40 from 26, studded with five trademark sixes, to get the visitors to a par score.
For the hosts, none of the bowlers put in a stand-out performance. Lasith Malinga and Krunal Pandya were the only ones to bowl economical spells.
