Defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) made light work of Gujarat Lions (GL) as they became the second team after Mumbai Indians to make it to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 playoffs.
In a packed Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on Saturday, captain David Warner and young Vijay Shankar struck solid half-centuries to tame a hapless GL bowling attack and guide their team to a comfortable eight-wicket victory.
Earlier, GL suffered an embarrassing collapse as they were shot out for 154 by SRH. After crossing 100 runs for the loss of no wicket in the 11th over, GL were blown away thanks to poor shot-selection by the middle-order batsmen, as well as some disciplined bowling by the SRH bowlers.
Mohammed Siraj was the stand-out bowler for the visitors. He broke GL's back by removing a set Ishan Kishan and captain Suresh Raina in the same over. The young pacer ended with figures of four for 32 from his four overs.
Afghanistan's Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan were mighty impressive too. While Nabi was extremely economical in his four overs, Rashid continued is good form and picked up three wickets.
For GL, only the openers Kishan and Dwayne Smith made any kind of contributions with the bat. The rest could barely get to double-digit scores.
