What is the full form of GJM?

GJM is a party that spearheaded the Gorkhaland agitation in the Darjeeling hills. The party is demanding a separate state in the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections. It wants the northern districts of West Bengal to be made into a new district called Gorkhaland.

The 87-year-old stalwart is seeking election from Malampuzha for the third consecutive time. He is seeking election from the CPI (M) bastion. Congress has chosen 46-year-old woman leader Lathika Subhash to take on Achuthanandan, who is a debutant in the poll arena.

A total of 108 nominations have been filed after the poll process was put in motion on March 19. Notable candidates who filed the papers were speaker R Radhakrishnan (from Bahoor), public health minister A Namassivayam (Villianoor), welfare minister M Kandaswamy (Embalom reserved), PWD minister, MOHF Shahjahan (Kalapet) and revenue and tourism Malladi Krishna Rao (Yanam, an enclave of Puducherry in Andhra Pradesh).

Congress has been allotted five seats in Chennai, a DMK bastion, out of the 63 earmarked for it under the seat-sharing deal. Under the pact, DMK will contest 121 seats, PMK 30, Viduthlalai Chiruthaigal Katchi 10, Kongu Nadu Munnetra Kazhagam 7, IUML two and Moovender Munetra Kazhagam one, the last two seeking election on the DMK symbol.

The Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre, linked to Indian Union Muslim League, are facilitating the organisation charter flights to Kerala from the Gulf so that they can vote in the assembly polls on April 13. The KMCC has booked its first chartered flight with RAK Airways (UAE), which will bring 166 voters to Kozhikode on April 9. The centre has made it clear that they’re not spending any money but are only facilitators for those who want to make the journey which costs 610 dirhams (about Rs7,500) one way.

A survey was conducted to check the positions of various parties in West Bengal . The survey revealed only around 75 of the 294 constituencies could be considered safe for CPI (M), while around 25 were marginal, that is they can go either way - to main opposition Trinamool Congress or CPI (M). Remaining 194 constituencies, according to the survey, the opposition is way ahead of the Left.
 

Assam will have two-phase polling with the first phase covering 62 assembly seats on April 4 and the remaining 64 seats on April 11. Counting of votes will take place May 13.

Villivakkam in north Chennai was the largest assembly constituency till the 2008 delimitation process shrunk it. K Anbazhagan, the general secretary of the DMK party, will face AIADMK veteran JCD Prabhakaran in the election on April 13.

The Tamil Nadu assembly has 234 seats, Kerala 140, and the Puducherry assembly has 30 seats. The Assam assembly has 126 seats, while the West Bengal assembly has 294 seats.

The Pattali Makkal Katchi, founded by Dr K Sundar and GK Mani, is based amongst the backward communities of Tamil Nadu. It has an alliance with the DMK, which the PMK’s founder S Ramadoss said “is only an electoral adjustment, not based on matters of policy.”
