Asserting that India and Vietnam share 'traditionally close relations', Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that his visit to Hanoi is a 'reinforcement of friendship, solidarity and comprehensive cooperation' between the two leaderships.

"India not only stood by Vietnam during its freedom struggle but also during its phase of national reunification. The late 1970s and 80s were a difficult period for Vietnam, and India was one of the few countries that stood by Vietnam in its time of need. My visit to Vietnam is a reinforcement of our friendship, solidarity and comprehensive cooperation," said Prime Minister Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi kick started his engagement in Hanoi by paying homage to national heroes and martyrs at their monuments this morning.

He also laid wreath at the war memorial located across the Ba Dinh Square, across the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and close to Hanoi Citadel.

Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in Vietnamese capital Hanoi on Friday night, held bilateral talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc and also met President Tran Dai Quang to deepen ties in key areas of defence, security and trade, oil exploration, solar energy and some other sectors, on Saturday. 

He also met Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, National Assembly Chairperson Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Vietnam in 15 years.
