Violence marred the polling in the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency on Sunday with eight people killed in firing by security forces. The bypoll also saw the voter turnout plunge to an all-time low of 7.14 per cent.
Stone-pelting was reported from over two dozen places across the three districts of Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal which constitute the Srinagar constituency.
Army was called in to assist security forces control a rampaging mob which pelted stones and hurled petrol bombs to set a polling booth ablaze in Ganderbal.
More than 100 security force personnel were injured in the violence, officials said, adding that several civilians were also injured in police firing.
On Tuesday, two government schools designated as polling stations for the April 12 bypoll to Ananatnag Lok Sabha constituency, were set afire by miscreants in Shopian and Pulwama districts in south Kashmir.
Prohibitory orders have been imposed in twin districts of Budgam and Ganderbal in central Kashmir.
Normal life was affected across the Valley due to the strike called by separatists. Shops, fuel stations and other business establishments were shut, while the attendance in banks and government offices was low, an official said.
Internet services also remained suspended for the second day. Public transport was off the roads, while private transport was minimal.
Kashmir University and Islamic University of Science and Technology have postponed all examinations that were scheduled for Monday.
