The long-pending GST Bill was taken up on Wednesday for consideration and passage in Rajya Sabha, amidst strong indications that the most far- reaching taxation reform in independent India would be supported by Congress and all other major political parties. It was passed after seven hours of debate unanimously.
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill, which has been in the making for over a decade, entails introduction of a single indirect tax regime across the country.
The government has circulated official amendments to the GST bill to drop 1% additional tax and include a definite provision in the statute for compensating states for revenue loss for 5 years.
The 2014 bill authorised GST Council to decide upon the modalities for resolution of disputes.
