Senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh recently said at a seminar that "the question that troubles us is that the 1998 nuclear tests by India conferred a kind of parity to Pakistan that it had always sought”.
Singh, who was external affairs minister at the time the Pokhran-II tests were conducted by the BJP-led NDA government, believes that this parity came about because the deterrent quotient was altered after the nuclear tests.
Does this admission mean the BJP miscalculated the consequences of the 1998 nuclear tests? Did the NDA government err in going nuclear?
