RS polls Update: Essel Group Chairman Dr Subhash Chandra wins seat from Haryana

Polling had been held in the crucial election to 27 Rajya Sabha seats in seven states, with a keen contest on cards in Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Haryana.

While 30 of the total 57 seats in the current round of biennial elections to the Upper House have already been decided without a contest, the fate of candidates for the remaining 27 seats is being decided by this evening as the results are being announced.

Polling began at Assembly premises in the state capitals at 9 AM and continued till 4 PM.

Counting of votes began at 5:00 pm.

Prominent among them are Union Ministers - Suresh Prabhu and Piyush Goyal, eminent lawyer Ram Jethmalani, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad's daughter Misa Bharati and former JD(U) president Sharad Yadav.

Jharkhand: JMM MLA arrested

# JMM MLA Chamra Linda was arrested in connection with a 2013 case in which he was allegedly involved in a scuffle.

Linda was facing an arrest warrant in a 2013 case, in which he had been allegedly involved in a scuffle at Assembly gate in late evening hours, official sources said.

Two Congress MLAs, Nirmala Devi and Devendra Singh, are also facing arrest warrants in separate cases.

Polling for lone RS seat from Uttarakhand concludes

Polling for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Uttarakhand was held amid tight security at the state Assembly with Chief Minister Harish Rawat and Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal among the first to cast their votes.

# Counting of ballots will begin after 4 PM, Secretary Vidhan Sabha Jagdish Chandra said.

Security around the Assembly premises was tightened with heavy deployment of security personnel around the building.

Congress's Pradeep Tamta and BJP backed Independent Anil Goel are taking on each other to grab the seat which falls vacant with BJP member Tarun Vijay's tenure getting over next month.

# Contest between the BJP's nominee Mahesh Poddar and Congress-backed Jharkhand Mukti Morcha candidate, Basant Soren, who is short of six votes to win the second seat.

# Right before voting, two Congress MLAs - (Devendra Singh and Nirmala Devi) and 1 JMM MLA (Chamra Limda) were issued warrants.

# Congress says warrant has been issued with the sole aim of arresting them and preventing them from voting.

Rajasthan

# Elections to the four seats of Rajya sabha are underway at the Rajasthan Assembly premises here.

Leader of opposition Rameshwar Dusi cast the first vote followed by former chief minister Ashok Gehlot, the assembly spokesperson said.

In the house of 200, the ruling BJP has 160 members and Congress 24. National Peoples Party has four, BSP has three, National Unionist Zamindara Party has two and seven are independents

Union minister Venkaiah Naidu, BJP's national Vice President Om Prakash Mathur, former RBI official Ramkumar Sharma and member of erstwhile Dungarpur royal family Harsh Vardhan Singh are the BJP candidates whereas Kamal Morarka filed nomination papers as independent candidate.

# Voting is underway for two Rajya Sabha seats in Haryana which are falling vacant in August, with three candidates including Union Minister Birender Singh in fray.

The Haryana Assembly has 90 members.

# INLD has 19 MLAs in the 90 member house while lone member of the Shiromani Akali Dal is also its ally.

# Lone BSP member in Haryana Assembly has announced his support to the BJP-backed Chandra,

# BJP has 47 MLAs in the Assembly, INLD 19, Congress 17 (after HJC merged with Congress recently), BSP one, SAD one and five are Independents.

Madhya Pradesh

# Voting for the three RS seats from Madhya Pradesh in which two BJP candidates senior journalist MJ Akbar and Anil Dave and Congress nominee Vivek Tankha are in the fray, is underway with MLA Ramniwas Rawat casting the first ballot at the State legislative assembly.

# After Rawat who is the Congress chief whip in the State Assembly, BJP MLA Girish Gautam cast his vote.

# In the polling, 228 members of the House are expected to take part.

# Each candidate need 58 votes to go to the Upper House of Parliament.

# While the Samajwadi Party has fielded seven candidates, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is contesting two seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress one each.  

# The BJP is also backing Independent candidate Preeti Mahapatra which will affect the Congress candidate Kapil Sibal the most. 

# Sibal is now looking to Mayawati's BSP and Ajit Singh's RLD for help.
