India and Iran on Monday signed 12 agreements, including a historic deal to develop the Chabahar port in Iran, after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Hassan Rouhani.
Addressing the media during a joint statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the agreement to develop the Chabahar port and related infrastructure and availability of about $500 million from India is a key milestone.
Visiting Iran is a great privilege, said Modi adding, "India and Iran are not new friends, our 'dosti' is as old as history. We have shared interests in each other’s growth and prosperity, joys and sorrows."
Further, he said that the agenda and scope of partnership between the two countries is truly substantial. "We exchanged views on the emerging regional situation and global issues of common concern. We also have shared concerns at the spread of forces of instability, radicalism and terror in our region," Modi said.
PM Modi also recalled that Iran was first country to come forward when earthquake had struck Gujarat when he was the chief minister.
"Later today we will sign a trilateral transport and transit agreement in partnership with India, Iran and Afghanistan," the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome on Monday as he met Rouhani for talks to deepen trade, investment and energy ties.
