Mobile services shut in Vadodara, curfew imposed as Patel community protest turns violent

Early on Wednesday, mob violence continued in parts of Gujarat, as Patel community members continued to press their demand for reservations. A number of measures were being undertaken by the police and official machinery to quell the violence.

Early on Wednesday, mob violence continued in parts of Gujarat, as Patel community members continued to press their demand for reservations. A number of measures were being undertaken by the police and official machinery to quell the violence.

Patel community protesters demanding OBC reservation on Tuesday had set two motorbikes on fire and damaged public property at Shahibaug area of Ahmedabad, after the release of their leader Hardik Patel. The protestors also damaged public property and set a bus on fire in Surat.

Section 144 was imposed in Kapodra Police Station and Sarthana Police station areas on Tuesday night after protesters turned violent in Surat, Gujarat. Patel, who was leading the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti in its protest, was detained after police used lathi charge at the protest site.

Earlier on Tuesday, the protest had turned violent as large groups of Patel Community youths went around on various roads of the city on their vehicles wielding sticks to enforce the bandh.

There are reports that a mob abducted three policemen in Morbi, then released them after beating them up. Firefighters have also been attacked.

A police sub inspector admitted in ICU after suffering severe injuries in stone pelting in Varachha area of Surat. Unconfirmed reports suggest that BJP politicians have also become a target for the mobs.

Meanwhile, the Ahmedabad Police has appealed for calm.

CM Anandiben Patel has defended police action during the rally in Ahmedabad on Tuesday night.

Soon after Section 144 was imposed in parts of Gujarat, reports have come in that mobile services have been shut down in Vadodara for 24 hours, and a curfew imposed in Mehsana. The suspension of mobile services will become effective from 6 am.

Meanwhile, internet services have also temporarily been suspended in Ahmedabad.

TOI reports that mobs are on a rampage on the streets of Rajkot. A mob entered into west zone office of Rajkot Municipal Corporation and damaged vehicles. A police chowki has been torched and an ATM vandalised in Morbi.
