Norwegian State Secretary for International Development (Deputy Foreign Minister) Jens Frolich Holte, in an exclusive interview with DNA Correspondent Ketan Vaidya, shares his insight on various issues common to the two countries.
I haven’t, but my Foreign Minister has visited India just. He went to Mumbai and cleaned up the beaches. He is very involved in the ocean agenda. Both Norway and India have huge coastlines and we recognise the importance of sustainable use of oceans. We can co-operate in renewable energy, generating electricity and sustainable oceans.
In Oslo, you have sitting governments of various political colours supporting public transport. With regards to smart cities, public transport companies are investing in technology, autonomous buses and electric buses. We can adapt smart city technologies because we have good smartphone penetration and a high-quality broadband. Even India does so and hence, it has the enablers to create smart cities.
Norway and India are consistent supporters of the multilateral UN system. This system is under pressure and we need to stand up for the values of International Collaboration.
In Norway, people are guaranteed affordable health care. On political level, it is heavy planning and a question of effective implementation. We also have policies for better public health. For example, air quality standards where we reduce emissions of dangerous substances. We also don’t allow garbage on the streets or clogging the fjords.
