Will the privilege motion against Manmohan Singh go through?

A privilege motion against prime minister Manmohan Singh was moved on Tuesday by BJP in both Houses of Parliament accusing him of misleading parliament regarding the 2008 trust vote on Indo-US nuclear deal. Here is a look at what would follow next:
1. Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar and Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari will consider whether there are sufficient grounds for the privilege motion to be admitted.

As Manmohan Singh is a member of Rajya Sabha, Kumar will have to refer it to the Rajya Sabha chairman if she finds the privilege motion to be admissible.

2. It will be then referred to a privileges committee. The committee’s finding will be referred to the full House and this may not happen any time soon. If the committee finds the prime minister guilty, then he can either be left off with a reprimand, or could be called to the bar of the House and chided.

What opposition thinks
Sushma Swaraj was not sure whether this motion will admitted, or whether it will be taken to its logical end and Singh will be reprimanded. She said her party wanted to use every parliamentary device available  — including the privilege motion — to highlight the serious discrepancy in the prime minister’s statement in parliament.

This is not the first time a privilege motion has been moved against a prime minister, but it is a first that leaders of opposition in both Houses have moved it.
