In the bid to win the trophies at the 90th Academy Awards, The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri took the top honours. While Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell won in acting categories for Three Billboards, Guillermo del Toro took home the Best Director and Best Picture honours.
There was a very little of surprise element. All the major category winners have been the favourites through the awards season. Gary Oldman won the Best Actor statue for his role as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. Coco was picked as the best animation movie.
The show dealt with the current situation of Hollywood that is marred by several sexual harassment allegations starting from Harvey Weinstein to the alleged accusations against host Ryan Seacrest. Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel did a good job of keeping it jovial enough in his monologue. He took a dig at Donald Trump, Weinstein and also cracked a few joke at the expense of Christopher Plummer's age. Like last year, instead of bringing the regular joes inside the Dolby Theatre, he took the stars for a surprise visit to a screening of A Wrinkle in Time and distributed snacks.
Frances McDormand, Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph had the best stage presence through the ceremony. In the end, it was nothing but clockwork. With apologies to Matt Damon, they ran out of time and Kimmel concluded the show.
