Overcoming all odds, Gujarat girl set to begin a new life

Ramila Devabhai Gothi was born with an extremely rare congenital malformation, but 22 years on, she is ready to establish herself in life.

Gothi suffered from phocomelia and was born without
the lower limbs. Her disability was noticed by social workers Liladhar Gadha and Mukesh Doshi, engaged in running the Jayaben Rehabilitation Centre managed by the Sarvodaya Trust in Kutch.

Trust officials said they have been rendering help to differently abled persons and assisting them in becoming self-reliant and leading a normal life.

Doctors from Mumbai, Nadiad and other places in Gujarat, who offer their services at the rehabilitation centre, treated Gothi for eight months.

They managed to bring her haemoglobin to normal level and provided her with artificial legs and other support systems. Before the artificial legs, she was equipped with a wooden tool and devices on her hands for making movements, they said.

She continued her studies and cleared the higher
secondary school examination this year.

Gothi has been promised the job of a receptionist at the
Vagad Welfare Association and she is excited about her life ahead. "Now I will be able to support my family," she said.
