Gujarat govt agrees to doctors' demands

State government on Tuesday accepted demands of the protesting medical teachers, bringing an immediate end to their 13-day strike. The teachers will now be paid as per pay scale decided by University Grants Commission (UGC).

Representatives of the medical teachers met government officials (principal secy Rajesh Kishore and MM Srivastava, additional chief secy of finance department) at Gandhinagar on Tuesday to discuss this issue and finally achieved success.

The 2,700-odd teachers were on strike from March 22, demanding UGC pay scale for their salaries. The strike crippled academics of medical students and all planned surgeries were shifted to municipal hospitals.

"We have finally ended the strike on a happy note. All six major demands of Gujarat Medical teachers Association (GMTA) have been approved by state government," said Dr Rajneesh Patel, president - GMTA. Teachers have resumed work.
