Endoscopic spine surgery for first time in Gujarat

In a first of its kind in Gujarat, Shalby Hospital successfully performed a two-hour endoscopic spine surgery. The team of doctors was headed by Dr Rohidas Shrinivas Mahadeo.

Patients are usually advised to go abroad for treatment. The surgery is said to have a host of advantages. It requires minimum incision and is thus painless. The surgery procedure is easy as compared to the complex open surgery.

Elaborating on the benefits of endoscopic spine surgery, Dr Mahadeo said, "It aims to reduce tissue trauma, prevent iatrogenic problems and preserves spinal segmental motion and stability.
It is usually executed outside India as it requires special skills of endoscopy and unique equipment -German-made ultrasonic bone dissector and the likes. However, I am proud to be a part of the team that has set a benchmark in the medical history of the state."

Dr Mahadeo has performed over 750 spinal surgeries and has been part of several workshops on the same.

Commenting on the development, Dr Pankaj Doshi, medical director of Shalby Hospital said, "We are glad to be the pioneers in Gujarat and to have started with endoscopic spine surgery under the supervision of veterans like Dr Mahadeo."

Such surgery also involves minimal blood loss and faster recovery. It permits easier operative approach in obese
patients and flexibility of using local or regional anaesthesia combined with conscious sedation.
