Early diagnosis and treatment can help fight cancer

Lifestyle changes are must, says Dr Raj Nagarkar.

Early diagnosis and treatment can help fight cancer

“The story of fighting cancer has changed today. It is no longer an incurable disease. We term it as a chronic disease. Patients who are diagnosed early and take proper treatment, have all chances of survival,’’ said onco surgeon Dr Raj Nagarkar, who has devoted his life to fight cancer. Even as the fact remains that the cases of cancer are increasing, modern medicine and strides in research have made it possible to overcome these challenges. “There are many new avenues that help in treating cancer,’’ said Dr Nagarkar, who is chairman of Curie Manavata Cancer Centre (CMCC), adding, “What is more important though is the change in attitude of the patients, care takers and doctors and other medical staff.’’

Observers Vandana Atre, a cancer survivor and now, a counsellor for cancer patients. “The cost of treatment is very high. There are many willing donors but the gap between them and the needy patients is too large. There has to an agency that can properly coordinate this. In the era of nuclear families, support from families, friends and society is important. This is where the counselors play a key role.’’ She also is worried about the increasing cases in the younger generation.

Dr Nagarkar recommends lifestyle changes to prevent cancer. “Prevention of cancer is a major area of focus. Proper diet and maintaining a regular schedule is a must. The younger generation is attracted to different vices in form of addictions and it is important to stay away from them.

Anti-cervical cancer vaccination should be a must for every daughter,’’ he said.

Though a dreaded disease, cancer treatment has brought a ray of hope for many.  “It is a crisis, and we have to tide over for a better tomorrow. What seemed like a dream in cancer treatment has become a reality. There is definitely a lot of hope,” Dr Nagarkar said.
