39 new dengue cases in Delhi, total rises to 5,682

The national capital reported 39 fresh cases of dengue today, taking the total number of patients this season to 5,682.

The number of cases per day had dipped to 22 on November 2 but since yesterday, 77 new cases were reported.

The cases of dengue generally start showing a downward trend with the advent of winter as low temperature and less humidity are not conducive for the breeding of dengue-carrier aedes agypti mosquitoes.

This year's total is more than double of that reported in 2006 when the number of cases was 2,537, the previous high in the past five years.

Eight people have lost their lives to dengue this season.

Shahdara North Zone has reported the highest number of dengue cases this season (751) followed by Rohini (727) and Civil Lines (622).

Delhi has also reported 33 chikungunya cases this season as per official figures, though health officials say the exact number could be much more.
