'Yogi Bear' is barely necessary

Film: Yogi Bear (U)
Cast: Tom Cavanagh, Dan Aykroyd, Justin Timberlake, Anna Faris, Andrew Daly, TJ Miller
Director: Eric Brevig
Rating: **

Yogi Bear (voice of Aykroyd), who dwells in Jellystone Park with companion (and unheeded voice of reason) Boo Boo (voice of Timberlake), possesses an intelligence that sets him apart from the rest of the ursidae though he channelizes it mainly to steal picnic baskets from visitors much to the chagrin of parks rangers Smith (Cavanagh) and Jones (Miller). Smith has a thing for nature enthusiast/ documentary filmmaker Rachel (Faris) while Jones has ambitions of making it to the top which is exploited by the evil Mayor Brown who intends shut it down the park.  After Yogi’s antics fouls up the park’s 100 anniversary celebrations, an infuriated Smith tells him to be just like the other bears, but will Yogi use his smarts to save the park from its doom?

One wonders why Aykroyd, clearly no Daws Butler, affects a slow Hungarian-sounding accent in his voicing of Yogi. While the acting and animation is really just about okay, one wishes that the light-weight screenplay was a lot less conventional. When one knows the general course the movie is going, the thrills are harder to come by. The humour, slapstick mostly, is best received by very small children.

Ultimately, Yogi Bear, which fails at being memorable and distinct, doesn’t hold its own against the likes of Rio and Rango which easily manage to keep adults as well as kids enthralled.
