Review: 'Lucky' (Kannada)

Film: Lucky (Kannada)
Director: Dr Soori
Cast: Yash, Ramya, Sharan, Sadhu Kokila, Lakshmi Devi
Rating: ***

This is Radhkia Kumaraswamy’s first film as a producer and for Dr Soori, a veterinarian, as a director. The debutante director has tried to cater to both the classes and the masses and his efforts do translate to the screen to a great extent.

Starting with the performances; Yash proved his mettle yet another time and special mention must be made of his dancing and his dialogue delivery. He has stayed true to his form as was seen in Modalasala and later Kirathaka.

Ramya of course proved amply why she had bagged the ‘numero uno’ tag in the Kannada films, deftly handling whatever the role calls for with aplomb. And her timing when it comes to humour, is pretty good. Her futile attempts to avoid Yash in a scene where she anchors a programme for a local television channel is quite funny. So is the bit in the film where she struggles to comprehend what Lakshmidevi is trying to say and dismisses her as a drunkard.

Sharan has given a creditable performance in a character role, while Sadhu Kokila tries his best to inject a dose of humour to the movie. And Arjun Janya did a neat job as a music director, with extremely hummable songs that are likely to catch on with the public.

The storyline is light-hearted and revolves around Vikram Kumar alias Lucky (Yash) who is in love with a television anchor Gowri (Ramya). Gowri gives Lucky the cold shoulder, and helping her keep Lucky at an arm’s length is her dog Joo Joo. Gowri is compelled to resign from her job and takes over as creative head of an advertising company. Lucky comes for a job interview and figuring that Gowri would probably not let him get a job in her work place, he takes on a different identity, Vicky, complete with new wardrobe and changed hairstyle.

As Vicky builds a rapport with Gowri, he comes to know that she’s pining for Lucky. To get to the bottom of the story and know whether he actually gets the girl, you’d have to watch the film. But suffices to say, it will be worth the effort, if such movies are what you like.
